My Quick Recommendation
The Groove Pillow is my go-to recommendation for patients who wake with neck pain, stiffness, or headaches — particularly side sleepers.

Why I Started Recommending the Groove Pillow
For many years in clinic, I would often get asked for pillow recommendations. Pillows are such a personal preference that I was always reluctant to suggest a specific one for fear of my patients not finding it comfortable and wasting their money.
However, just before starting this website, I came to realise that I had been doing my patients a disservice and that being a chiropractor, I was in a good position to advise people on them. After doing my research, the Groove Pillow was the one I settled on.
What I Like About the Groove Pillow
The main thing I like is that it feels supportive without feeling overly “orthopaedic.” That’s important because a lot of ergonomic pillows are technically supportive but genuinely uncomfortable to sleep on. I discovered this myself when I tried one early on in my career — which became another reason I was reluctant to recommend ergonomic pillows initially.
The memory foam is still firm, but with a lovely soft ‘give’ in it when you rest your head down. The Groove Pillow has a contoured shape that supports the neck more naturally, particularly for side sleepers. It also keeps its shape well throughout the night instead of flattening too easily.
- Good quality materials
- Comfortable for side and back sleepers
- Excellent value for money
- Quick delivery
- Helpful customer service
- 100-night free trial
The trial period is a big plus because pillows are personal. What feels brilliant for one person may not suit somebody else. 100 days is plenty of time to decide if the Groove Pillow is a good fit for you.

What Do My Patients Say?
I now keep a Groove Pillow in clinic and often let patients try it during treatment sessions. The first thing most people say is how comfortable it feels. I’ve got used to the audible ‘ahhh’ as they express their satisfaction on the pillow.
A common comment has been that it’s soft but still holds its shape. A lot of memory foam pillows either feel rock hard or collapse after a few minutes. This one seems to strike a much better balance between comfort and support.
Several patients have gone on to buy one after trying it in clinic and, so far, I haven’t had any negative feedback.
“I noticed a significant improvement after changing pillows. I’d been struggling with frequent headaches and neck pain for several months — the difference has been so pleasing.” — Lynne H., patient
The 100-day trial is nice to have, but I genuinely have not had anybody take advantage of it yet.
Do I Personally Use One?
Honestly, no. I had already been using the same pillow for years before I discovered the Groove Pillow and it’s always suited me well — it’s a pretty standard firm pillow that I have no reason to change as I sleep well and don’t suffer with neck issues. For people in the same situation, I would say stick with what you know.
That said, after lying on the Groove Pillow myself, I was genuinely impressed with how it felt. If I was currently replacing my own pillow, it’s one I’d seriously consider. I’d rather say that honestly than pretend every product I recommend has completely transformed my life.
Who Might Benefit Most?
In my opinion, the Groove Pillow may be particularly useful for people who:
- Wake up with neck tension or stiffness
- Constantly adjust their pillow during the night
- Sleep mainly on their side
- Feel unsupported around the neck and shoulders
- Wake with headaches or upper neck stiffness
- Find standard pillows either too flat or too firm
Who Might Not Need It?
In my experience, it is very common to have neck pain at night or in the mornings without it being related to the type of pillow. Sometimes, an unhappy neck will just be painful to lie on regardless. This is particularly true for:
- Acute neck injuries such as whiplash
- Disc and nerve related problems — cervical disc issues or pinched nerve
- Non-specific mechanical neck pain
For example, prolonged sustained postures during the day can contribute to morning stiffness. I often compare it to drinking too much alcohol the night before and having a hangover the next morning — you can’t blame the pillow for that!
Unless you are definitely unhappy with your current pillow and would like to try something new, I would start by reading through some of the condition pages above. The 3 most important things to focus on are:
- Sitting in a supportive ergonomic chair
- Stretching and moving your neck throughout the day — see the Exercise Library
- Strengthening your postural muscles — try the chin tuck and Brugger’s exercises in the Exercise Library
Final Thoughts
What I like about the Groove Pillow is that it feels like a genuinely good-quality product rather than a gimmicky “miracle posture” pillow. The feedback from patients has been consistently positive, the company has been good to deal with, and the 100-night trial makes it low risk to try for yourself.
No pillow replaces good movement habits, exercise, or proper management of persistent neck pain. But if your current pillow is uncomfortable or unsupportive, changing it can sometimes make a surprisingly noticeable difference.
